This, I think is my favorite so far. To me this is the very finest example of how Tom paints an image with his voice for when I listen to it I do not picture him at all. I see all of the characters. I think he does an excellent job of the female voices which are difficult to do with out sounding hokey.
I have to say that Tom has the power to elicit tears from me.
The ending always makes me cry. But in a good way.

I have listened to Courtesan 3 times already. I also have Clockwork but I think he shines in this one. My favorite part is when he describes the warmth of his mother while she is holdng him. He has no recolection of her as she died when he was only 4, but he could recall that. He barely speaks above a whisper when descibing that moment and it is absolutely soul crunching.

I never get tired of hearing the story. My favorite part is the ending when La Draga's little girl comes to live with them. It makes me cry. It is so beautiful they way he talks to her and gives her the drinking glass with her name on it... FYI...did you know that the cover of the book/CD is a real painting by the actual Tiziano Vecellio? Titian’s Venus of UrbinoThat book of the postitions is real too...as well as lots of other details... I have read the book (not the above mention one...ahem...) as well. Since the CDs are abridged I wondered just what was cut out. It is barely noticeable but worth the read...especially if you can hear Tom in your head while you read it.

I agree with you. Clockwork Orange was very good. But Courtesan is my favorite as well. It is "soul-crunching" and makes you cry. I am in such awe of his talent. You really are visulizing the characters in your mind and feel as if you are in Venice 15th century.

There is nothing more delicious than having Tom Hollander on your Ipod, especially when he's reading ITCOTC...
I am enjoying it very much so far!

We have already mentioned that Tom can read A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G to us but that one is particularly delicious. Have the tissues ready at the end. I wish I knew what he is going to read next...

I totally adore it when he does the Spanish parts in ITCOTC...it makes me smile. He is so very talented.
If only Tom did audio books of my uni textbooks, my education would be so much more entertaining.
Just imagining that
"Hobart University Press Presents, Medieval Britain; a Unit Reader by M. Bennet, read by Tom Hollander" I can actually imagine his voice reading that! Absolutely crazy.
Sorry...mild fantasy...I should stop ^_^

The thing that blows my mind is that when I listen to it I do not picture Tom. I see Buchino...Fiametta...LaDraga...Aretino.... How on earth does he do that?He even made me like A Clockwork Orange! A book I never wanted to read and a movie I could not sit through. I am hungry for something new. I hope he is working on something. Tom...if you are out there lurking give us a sign.

How FANTASTIC was his voice for Aretino though! He nailed that one to the T. And I loved the way his voice softened when he read the female parts...it was beautiful to listen to! HE'S JUST SO DAMNED TALENTED! * deep breathes...deep breaths... * okay, I've recovered

OK...raise your hand if you want to tell Sarah Dunant how much you loved ITCOTC! Here is your chance. I was looking for a way to contact her to see if perhaps she is planning (if that is in her power) to have Tom do another audio version of one of her books and stumbled on her website which has a forum. She actually participates too! Sarah Dunant Forum NOTE: I noticed that you have to refresh page for it to come up sometimes. Jump in if you feel so inclined... because you never know....
