OK...raise your hand if you want to tell Sarah Dunant how much you loved ITCOTC! Here is your chance. I was looking for a way to contact her to see if perhaps she is planning (if that is in her power) to have Tom do another audio version of one of her books and stumbled on her website which has a forum. She actually participates too! Sarah Dunant Forum NOTE: I noticed that you have to refresh page for it to come up sometimes. Jump in if you feel so inclined... because you never know.... I went and had a look straight away!....thats so great how she replies to participants on the forum...I love what you wrote Deb... I almost bought The Birth of Venus just the other night too...now after going to her site i think i'm deffinately going to get it... and...at her recommendation, im going to look into visiting Ferrara when i go there in a year or so...hehehe..yay!... Great find Deb!...let us know if she replies about Tom ;D

I was a little disappointed at first because I simply wanted to email her but all the links in the contact area only go to agencies and publishers—not real people! But the forum is actually better. I am hoping that others (hint, hint) will chime in and then she won't think it is just me! I actually have no idea how they go about hiring voice talent. As in illustrations and covers of books often the author has no say in it, which sucks. I know if I had a book published I would want some control over that. But then I am a control freak anyway. Example: The Birth of Venus. Go listen to the little snippet of the audio version. I was thinking of getting that but I can't stand the voice of the woman that reads it. Guess I will need to read it myself—hearing Tom's voice in my head. I can do that now. Bet you can too!

Yes indeed, i hear his voice in my head in most books now.. .... I was thinking that i dont think she would have Tom do anymore of her books...because all the others are from a female perspective....Which would mean he would be narrating mainly in a female voice...lol...(he could pull it off) but i dont think they would do that.... There is one book in particular that i read and am now re-reading called "Chicago Confidential" by Max Allan Collins, which follows the story of the character Nathan Heller a P.I. When i read it I heard Tom, and i think this would be perfect for his next Audiobook... *sigh* if only..... So...(hint, hint) i will most likely jump onto the forum again, and express how wonderful ITCOTC is and insist she use Tom for another book...lol...or write a new one with his voice in her head...lol...hahha...ah....i don't think that will happen either...lol Maybe would should make a list of books that we think Tom would do well, and email recommendations or the idea to the publishers of those authors books....heheh we may start something for him... ..... what do ya think?

I was disappointed to see this one he reads is abridged though. I never read abridged books! Which sucks, he's read a book by my favourite ever author (Diana Wynne Jones - Conrad's Fate) and that's abridged too! Gah. I have this book to read though on my shelves.

Someone who is familiar with Conrad's Fate! I just love Tom's reading of that. It is so great and very funny. Of course Tom does all the voices and there are parts that had me in fits of laughter. As for the abridgment of that I can't say because I have only listened to him read it. However…I was curious about the abridgment of Courtesan and read the book as well and you would be hard pressed to notice what has been taken out. In fact the only part I can remember is that there was more about Bucino and his parrot. So give yourself a treat and listen to it. It is truly wonderful and probably my second favorite of Tom's audio performances right after The Lieutenant.

Ahhh!!! Oh I would love to hear him read Conrad's Fate. I bet he DOES do all the voices. I adore Diana Wynne Jones, I wish he'd read more of her especially if it was Charmed Life, the first in the series. I wish I could get hold of a copy, but my library doesn't have it I don't think and I'm not about to pay for it. Hmm. I saw an audio for courtesan the other day and snatched it off the shelves to find it was read by some other bloke. I'm glad to hear though you didn't notice many changes. I'm not really big on audiobooks at all but I'd give one a go for Tom.

It is great. Ya...you have to watch out for that. Accept NO substitutes! LOL. I LOVE audiobooks. Especially in the car and on long trips. They make the time whiz by. We listened to the entire A Clockwork Orange read by Tom on the way to LA and back to get our passports for the trip to London. I thought it appropriate. Then when we talked to Tom I told him about it. You really, really should listen to The Lieutenant though. Did you know that you can hear excerpts of these at Audible.com?

I am waiting for this from Amazon, and from the comments here, I can barely wait!! Looks like I will have to get the Lieutenant too....
Just listening to some of the clips you posted, Deb. Crikey...I wish the post would hurry up and arrive, but I fear it may be a while longer, as the white stuff is falling from the sky once more.

Gahhhhh...You have hours and hours of wonderful listening pleasure ahead of you. And yes, DO get The Lieutenant. I am sure everyone here is tired of hearing my yammer on about it but it would be fun to have someone to discuss it with. I read the book as well. Make sure he is the reader, duh. I think there *is* another reader out there though. Why do they do that?

I had a lovely surprise today, a delivery from Amazon on Sunday due to a backlog with the recent heavy snow. In it, this audio book, so whatever I was planning to do got put aside so I could devote myself to it, with the last part of Custom of the Country sandwiched in the middle. Wow, I am not sure what to say. Lovely characterisations, and convincing womens voices, and of course the near perfect impression of his mate Bill Nighy as Aretino! What a mimic. Wonderfully clear mental images of 16thC Italy from the horror and grime, to the sumptuous excesses of the upper classes. Having had Tom purring into my ears for the last six hours, I feel quite dazed...now that is aural sex.

Smiling -- so glad you got to hear that! It's amazingly difficult to lay hands on the "correct" version of this audio book, hahaha -- at least where I live.... Question: re your comment on Tom and Aretino -- did you mean that when Tom speaks Aretino's voice, that he makes him sound a little like Bill Nighy? Interesting! Now I have to go back and listen again....
