Hi ewerybody, do you know this interview?
Q. How did you come to cast Donald Sutherland and Tom Hollander? And did you ever have to rein them in, particularly Tom Hollander? A: I prefer actors who go over the top to those that don’t go far enough, because you can always rein actors in – it’s more difficult to bring it out of actors. It was quite easy to tell Tom he was going too far, and to pull it back a bit. We met a number of actors for Mr Collins and each played it in a different way. One actor came in and played him as Tony Blair! Tom came in and you always want someone to surprise you, to not play it as you specifically imagined. He came in and played him as this weird little guy who couldn’t quite manage to communicate in the way that he wanted to, and couldn’t understand why not everyone respected him as much as he respected himself. They didn’t take him seriously and he’d tried all his life to be taken seriously, and I thought that was exciting and something I hadn’t seen. It surprised me, and I liked to be surprised.
I found it very interesting!

I agree! And while on the subject, I thought I'd post this clip of "Inside the DVD, 'Pride & Prejudice'" that includes a short interview with Tom - movies.aol.com/movie/pride-and-prejudice-2005/21914/video/inside-the-dvd-pride-and-prejudice/1469599. "It was just me and Keira and Tallulah and all the girls, playing sardines in the cupboard. That was one of the happiest days of my life." *laughs* "So all of the men have been blessed by the women on this for which we are all eternally grateful, I'm sure. They're charming. Very difficult to focus sometimes, not on the work, but just on which woman to focus on."

I love that clip because it has Tommy doing the best dance ever in the history of mankind in my humble opinion

I love that clip because it has Tommy doing the best dance ever in the history of mankind in my humble opinion Oh me too! And I love that sitting under the tree interview. He is so happy in that! And that dance is repeated a little bit in the extras of DMC...the bloopers...in front of the BIG map. Giggle. We need a thread for Tom's dancing bits. I know of another one... I will make one tonight. It will be called "May I have this dance...?" or something like that.

Our esteemed Beckettologist suggested I shared some photos that I took in P&P Country. Last week I went to Meryton and around Rosings.I was cheeky enough to stand in the pulpit from which Mr Collins gave his sermon. I have also visited Pemberley and NetherfieldSomething to pass the time, anyway!!

I have been in a "Mr Collins" mood lately. Probably because the name sounds similar to my 3 week old grandson Colin. Tonight I am watching Pride & Prejudice again with Joe Wright's commentary. It really is wonderful because he says some wonderful things about Tom. He calls him a genius. We knew that but it is nice to hear. It is also fun to hear things like how it was Tom's idea to use the little flower and that he was hunting through a flower patch looking for one. The church scene gag was Tom's idea too and he and Matthew came up with the elbow thing at the dance. If you have not watched the film this way you owe it to yourself to try it. Lots of fun and interesting tidbits!

WOW!...that sounds awesome. My copy of P&P is just what i taped off the tele, so no audio or diaries for me ... But thanks to the magic of youtube i have seen him dance and play sardines with the gals....lol...sooooo cute! That has actually made me think of other DVD's where they say wonderful things about Tom in the audio. I've mentioned POTC 2 where the writers talk about him at the start, but i have to mention Maybe Baby....has anyone watched it with Ben Elton and Hugh Laurie talking about the film??? They mention some funny stuff about Tom and making that movie. They talk about his lines, and how he add the line about the Mushroom P....something something at the restraunt.... and how they tried to put him off when he did his lines..... too funny!

Thank you! Those were lovely! . I had the good fortune to be in England for 6 years during my childhood and loved the English countryside very much. Reading Julia's book, "When the bough breaks" brings back many memories. We lived not very far from the Cotswolds in Ecchinswell (Bishops Green in Hampshire) and it was a little bit of heaven on earth!
