For some crazy reason I (and possibly Irene's youngest daughter) seem to be the only ones that love this. True, it is a children's story but I still love it. He captures all the different characters and it is just plain fun.
Parts of it have me laughing out loud...
the ironing....the cooking lesson ... "listen to the hippotamus" and to be "brutally frank" Uncle Albert and Conrad's mother are both hilarious
Conrad's Fate is by Diana Wynn Jones

I ordered it from... Soundbooks (Scroll down towards the bottom of the link) They are in Australia. It was the only place I could find it. Not everyone likes it...it IS a children's book but I just find it really fun and hilarious. No dark powerful river there but I am sure the kid in him enjoyed reading it. It is a little like Harry Potter but not as dark. Anyway, I love it. Author: Wynne Jones, Diana Title: Conrad's Fate No. CDs/cassettes/mp3-CDs: 4CD Edition length: abridged Price: $27.95 Narrator/Performer(s): narrated by Tom Hollander

Haven't heard this one either. Sounds interesting. Is there a sample of it online somewhere?

I would love to listen to this - I love Diana Wynne Jones. I wish he'd read some of her other books - such as the first one in this series Charmed Life! Anyway, I just came in here to say... Diana Wynne Jones as a child, lived in John Ruskin's secretary's old house (his descendent, the secretary's that is were the children that inspired Arthur Randsome's Swallows and Amazon Books) and Brantwood (Ruskin's house) just up the lane. Small connections, strange world. www.suberic.net/dwj/bio.html (DWJ's biography, scroll down a bit)

Very interesting with the connections to Ruskin and Beatrix Potter. I wonder if she typed all that herself or if she dictated it to someone. For a writer it certainly had a lot of typos in it!

She might have had someone else type it up, she writes by hand first herself usually and then types it up.
I read The Time of the Ghost recently and it mirrors a lot of her life growing up which was very interesting to read. Sadly, Diana doesn't seem to have much long left to live... she's stopped her treatment for lung cancer recently.
It's also interesting reading that many people who went to lectures by J.R.R Tolkien and C.S Lewis went on to be writers themselves... they must have been truly inspiring people. She's so lucky.
