Greetings fellow Hollanderians,
I wrote imdb today, on behalf of Tom's entry.
You all know imdb, right? That's a place where a lot of people go to check facts on films and film actors. A lot of people don't realize that it is written by -- everyone, kind of like wikipedia, except it's not a wiki. If you want to add, subtract or correct an entry, you have to go through a little process, and give good reasons, etc. but then it gets changed. I proposed a revamp of Tom's "bio" a while back, and they posted it the next day -- cool!
Anyhow, I think we are as good a group as any in the world to kind of "look after" Tom's entry there. I like to look in every so often (also over at wikipedia) to see how it's doing. I see it's grown a bit, particularly since the Thomagination site went up -- proof people are adding to his list of accomplishments. As they should!
Anyhow, all this to say that if you don't like what's in an imdb entry, register and change it to something more accurate. IMDB is not the be-all, end-all, and "they" aren't authorities. WE are. After all, we write it!
So I was kind of scratching my head over I an odd exchange with someone at imdb today... Apparently, they are now including a new "service" called "NewsDesk", front and center, which looks like a automatic newsfeed for each entry. Since I am a human being, and not an automated anything, I took a closer look at the last articles submitted. Both are about Jamie Foxx, not Tom. Since each features a "Report a problem" link -- I reported them. (they even have the "Soloist" character name wrong!)
I got a response, a few hours later, saying basically, "Tom's name is in them", but no offer to remove them. So I wrote them again, and this is what I said:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for the quick response.
I am asking because I hope that human input is useful to the news-item service.
The article is about Jamie Foxx. I don't think Tom Hollander's interests are served, nor his fans', by including it here. It's really a kind of "false drop" for Hollander, and that his name is in it isn't sufficient reason to include it. I'm afraid that adhering to the rule that because an actor's name is included in something, no matter how passingly, is enough reason to put it on his entry, will make for a lot of meaningless clutter in all entries, and I shudder to think what some entries may end up like, if that is the case.
IMDB is contributed to by people who care about the entries -- I am showing IMDB that I care about this entry by letting it know that this article is immaterial, here. Please take it down.
------------------------------
what do you make of this? I think it's going to be an absolute mess, if they insist in including everything that mentions any actor's name in it. And if they don't, and only include submitted things from some service (Aceshowbiz.com sent the Foxx items) then they can darn well dis-include them once they are corrected. Otherwise it's just free publicity for the better-known actors -- and that's not right.
