Last night it occurred to me that I had not investigated the director's commentary on The Soloist DVD. What is wrong with me you may well ask. Well I am not sure. So today I did just that to see what dear Joe Wright had to say about Tom. The good news is that he DOES talk about Tom and says that Tom is one of his favorite actors. We even learn that it was Tom's idea to have his hair in that goofy style. Apparently he wanted to look like one of the BeeGees and brought in a photo of (and this is a quote from Joe who apparently is not all that familiar with the BeeGees) "...based on Gibbs of the BeeGees..." Come on now Joe...which one? Barry?...Andy?...Maurice Gibb? The bad news is that there is no further enlightenment as to why Tom's role is so microscopic nor why Tom only gets to HOLD the cello.

I think that you were so disappointed about Tom's character being almost insignificant in the movie that you wanted to distance yourself from The Soloist movie for a while. It was quite a blow to us all But, I am glad Tom is mentioned in the commentary!
