Thanks so much beckettologist! I agree with all of you! I really don't see the point having dvds made for certain regions since it would be much easier to have it all the same.

Me neither. It just encourages piracy as far as I'm concerned, it's about time they learnt that. I'm not sure why they do it, obviously something to do with money...

Just been watching this on DVD after seeing the series as it went out last year, and I do fancy doing some reading about Ruskin...putting aside his possible predilections for the moment, to find out more about his artistic side. Any recommendations welcome.

Just been watching this on DVD after seeing the series as it went out last year, and I do fancy doing some reading about Ruskin...putting aside his possible predilections for the moment, to find out more about his artistic side. Any recommendations welcome. Well having read both the humongous biography and the autobiography I have come to the conclusion that he had a messed up childhood but did not know it at the time. His parents sheltered him so much that he never got the chance to be a normal boy. It baffles me that he even married at all though he did desperately want to marry Rose later in his life. It is really fascinating stuff, though it is heartbreakingly sad at times. You know how sometimes people say "If you coudl go back in history and meet someone who would you want to meet?" Well I never really knew until I read about Ruskin. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that his ideas on nature, art and painting (watercolour, actually) resonate in me. I would love to have met him. If you read Praeterita you will no doubt agree that that man needed more love or at the very least regular hugs!

Thanks Deb. I think I will add an architecture book too as that has always been a love of mine since our art teacher at school introduced us to Pevsner and the delights therin!
Often the most talented are very badly flawed and screwed up when it comes to personal lives. Sadly it seems to go with the territory.
